Skincare 101

Nowadays skincare is becoming a more popular topic of conversation than it was in past years. For a long time people were oblivious to exactly how much could actually  affect their skin on a daily basis and how to properly and effectively combat these issues. Everything from harsh weather to what you eat can affect your skin. Most people with skin problems assume that products alone will be enough to combat the problem but a lot of skin issues  will actually stem from an internal issue aswell as external.
In recent years we have all become more aware of how a healthy diet, regular exercise and regular water intake can positively affect our skin. All of these things will help/improve all types of skin problems along with a regular skin care regime. As Jennifer Rock would say ‘FEED THE SKIN FROM WITHIN’! It is a mantra to live by! Advanced Nutritional Programme, a company which sell vitamins and nutritional supplements even have a skin range. This is a range of supplements which are specifically designed to target the skin and provide it with all the vitamins and nutrients your skin needs to perform at its best. Because don’t forget your skin is an organ!!

Now once you have your nutrition programme in place it’s time to start looking into your skincare regime. Your basic skin care regime will consist of Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising on a daily basis, morning and evening, and exfoliating 1-2 times a week depending on your skin type. Cleansing your skin helps to remove any makeup or residue on the skin leaving it squeaky clean and toning helps to soothe the skin, remove any cleanser that may be left on your skin, close open pores etc. The type of affect your moisturiser will have will then depend on what type of skin you have and what issue you particularly want to treat for example dryness, oiliness or redness etc. You should also be using an SPF on a daily basis all year round to prevent skin damage.

When it comes to skincare you should also be aware of what type of ingredients are in the products you’re using and how they will affect your skin. There are two main types of products you will come across, cosmetics and cosmeceuticals. Now what is the difference? Cosmetics are products that you  buy in your local pharmacies and shops usually without a consultation, they commonly contain perfumes and artificial ingredients which may irritate the skin and don’t tend to penetrate deep enough into the skin. For products to benefit the skin they have to penetrate through the top layer of the skin and most cosmetics don’t do this.

However cosmeceuticals, a mixture of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, contain active ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, antioxidants and enzymes etc. All of these active ingredients help to penetrate past the top layer of skin, target and improve skin conditions and prevent against future damage. They also contain no artificial ingredients or perfumes, therefore they are less likely to irritate the skin or cause new skin issues like cosmetics can. Cosmeceuticals are usually stocked and sold in salons and skincare clinics rather than pharmacies and most places will probably carry out a skin consultation before recommending products to you so they can be sure of what products will work best for skin.

At the moment my absolute favourite range of cosmeceuticals is Image Skincare. I am sure you have all heard about it in recent months due to the growing amounts of positive results people have had with these products. It is an American company but has become very popular in Ireland lately. They have several different ranges of products to suits all skin types and are reasonably priced considering how effective they are. Another reason I love this brand is because of their business development manager here in Ireland and Scotland, Jennifer Rock, more commonly known as ‘The Skin Nerd’. She is an absolute fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things skin!

I follow her on literally every form of social media and I am never disappointed. She regularly does live Q&A’s on her snapchat story to answer any skin queries you may have and is always giving out valuable pieces of knowledge. Not to mention she is such a sweetheart and totally hilarious! If you’re lucky enough as well you might catch her talking all things skin  at some kind of an event such as ‘Fashion to a Tea – Part Two’ which is taking place in the Armada Hotel on the 4th of December where she will be talking along side James Patrice, Leanne Moore, Jennifer Wrynne and Paula Callan. Aoibhin Garrihy and Sharon Connellan will be hosting the event and there will be live music by JJ Hartigan. If you are someone who is interested in skincare or starting to learn about it The Skin Nerd is definitely the one to follow!

I hope this might help some of you get a better understanding of how to look after your skin properly. If you have any little skin tips of your own or any favourite skin facts as always let me know, I would love to hear them. I will attach links below where you can research and purchase Advanced Nutrition Programme products, Image products and Fashion to a Tea – Part Two tickets. I’ll pop in a link to Jennifer Rock, The Skin Nerds, Website also so you can start learning all things skin!

All my love,
SJL X

Sosu Lashes and Limited Edition Lash Case

Hello lovelies! This week I'm going to do the long awaited review of the Sosu Lashes I picked up and her new limited edition lash case. I've been trying out these lashes for months now and if you follow me on Instagram i'm sure you'll know they've made a few appearances there. I was a little late to catch on to the Sosueme trend, I actually didn't even try out her lashes until she released her 'Primark Exclusive' range and even then I only bought one pair in case I didn't like them.  I've never been much of a false lash person for the simple fact that I could not apply them, I literally could NOT do it. I either ended up with the lash stuck pretty much everywhere it shouldn't have been or couldn't get them to stick at all. The only false lashes I could apply myself were the Primark individual lashes so when I bought a pair of her 'Belle' lashes from Primark I wasn't very hopeful but I still wanted to see what all the hype...

Self Love...

In light of it being World Mental Health Awareness Day (October 10th) I wanted touch on one subject in particular that I have been trying to teach myself in recent months: SELF LOVE! In the past few years I have personally struggled with depression and anxiety and in order to help myself cope I use various coping mechanisms that I have picked up during the years. Over time I worked out what made me feel better and what triggered my anxiety so I was more capable of handling a problem should it arise but I wasn’t always able to do this on my own. I picked up several coping mechanisms through mindfulness groups and counselling, if those services weren’t available to me it would have been a lot harder for me to understand what exactly was happening within myself. One thing that you will always hear about in relation to mental health awareness will be self love. Self love is a very important part of the process in making yourself feel better or more able to cope. This was a concept...

Skincare - The Acids

Hello Lovelies! This week my blogpost is going to be based around skincare. If you read my Skincare 101 blog a couple of months ago you will know that I talked about cosmeceutical products, more specifically the differences between them and normal cosmetics. Cosmeceuticals are basically a mix of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They often contain ‘active’ ingredients which can penetrate into the deep layers of the skin therefore they are more beneficial to your skin than normal cosmetics you may find in a pharmacy or supermarket. Among the long list of ‘active’ ingredients you may find in cosmeceuticals, the word acid may come up quite frequently. Cosmeceuticals can contain one or more acid at a time such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or azelaic acid and so on. These are all ‘active’ ingredients as they penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and they all have different uses and benefits for different skin types. Products from brands such as Image Skincare, Nip and F...
