The Semi-Colon Project
The semi-colon project is the latest project trying to raise awareness for people who have suffered depression, self-harm and anxiety. In a bid to raise awareness the organisation is asking anyone who has suffered with these to draw a semi-colon on their wrists as a symbol of survival and strength. The whole idea behind it is that an author uses a semi-colon when he could have ended a sentence but chose not to just like anyone who has suffered anxiety or depression could have ended their own lives but chose not to. Instead they chose to fight and survive. As someone who has suffered with both anxiety and depression I know how hard it is to try and overcome it. I'm so happy that mental health awareness is becoming more popular and that people are now more open when discussing the subject. Depression and anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. Everybody is going to have tough times in life and not everybody handles things the same way.
So, to anyone who has ever suffered with anxiety or depression, anyone who has ever self harmed and to people who are just going through a tough time in life,
Do not be ashamed! People have feelings, we're going to hurt, cry, bleed and even want to disappear sometimes but that's life. If we didn't have to go through these tough times in life we would never appreciate the good times. Everyday its you who gets yourself out of bed, you who dresses yourself and does your hair and make up for the day, you who presents yourself to the world with the hopeful belief that things will get better and that is AMAZING! I know what it's like to not want to face the world and it sucks, but together we can help eachother overcome these times, together we can raise awareness for a brighter future.
Today, I drew a semi-colon on my wrist above my scars to show that we are not alone.
