Okay, we all have to go through it but that doesn't mean we have to like it but there are some pointers to survive it. There's nothing worse than having to sit in front of a total stranger and explain why you're right for a job, us Irish aren't exactly used to selling ourselves, I mean come on we cant even take a compliment let alone boast about all our skills and good qualities but that is the price of success in the job industry.
So here are my top 5 tips to surviving that dreaded interview:
1. Present yourself well!! Theres no point showing up to a job interview wearing your comfiest pair of leggings and your favourite (slighty worn) wooly jumper or your brand new nike tracksuit. No matter what kind of job it is you're going for the employer has to be confident that you will always show upto work looking professional.
2. Stay calm! I know how nerve wrecking it is believe me, but the last thing you want is to go in there freaking out unable to speak from pure nerves. One interview is not going to dictate to the rest of your life so just chill! You want to be able to show them you are fully capable of whatever they throw your way and a big red face and an awkward smile is not what they want. I've learned that at this stage, sadly..
3. Don't show up empty handed.. Always back your self up, you can't beat what's on paper. Whether it's some kind of cert, a letter of recommendation or even just a copy of your CV they've already seen it shows your some way prepared. Plus its always handy as a little reminder for yourself. Its so easy to freeze up when you're asked a question but when your CV is right in front of you how could you forget??
4. BE ON TIME!! I can not stress this enough. I know things happen and things come up and that's just the way life is but if you can help it at all do not be late! If you're late for the interview how can the employer guarantee you won't be late for work? They don't know if it was just a slip up or pure habit. And if you are going to be late a quick call to let them know you're running late will go a long way.
5. But most importantly be yourself. I know it doesn't come that naturally in that kind of situation but that's what they want to see. After all if you get the job they will eventually get to know you. There's no point pretending to be someone you're not at any point in life and there's no point belittling yourself either. Be proud of your skills and honest about your downfalls, they will appreciate that more than anything else.
These always help me and I hope they help you aswell. Just remember to breathe. What's meant for you won't pass you by.
Lots of love,
SJL X
