Skincare Basics - Sensitive Skin Type

Sensitive Skin

Hello lovelies! This week for my series of Basic Skincare Regime blogs I'm going to be talking about Sensitive skin! This can be a difficult skin type to have as many products won’t agree with it and could irritate the skin further! If this is a skin type you think you might have keep reading to find out why it happens and how you can treat it. I would like to remind you all again though to be sure of your skin type before you start treating your skin for a particular one, even attending a free skincare consultation in a clinic can be extremely beneficial so you can be sure of your skin type and how to treat it. This is extremely important for sensitive skin as it has to be dealt with delicately!

What causes Sensitive Skin?
Sensitive skin occurs when the skin’s natural barrier is broken down by things such as dirt, pollution, climate changes, hard water etc. Sensitive skin can also be caused by skincare/cosmetic products you are using irritating the skin or even be due to dehydration within the skin. The truth is, like most skin types, there are lots of things that can cause your skin to become sensitive, all you can do is treat it accordingly and pay attention to things that might heighten its sensitivity to try to get to the root problem.

How do you identify Sensitive Skin?
  • Redness
  • Sensitive to touch
  • Burning sensation/irritation upon product application
  • Dryness
  • Itchiness/Blotchiness
*Note that you may experience these symptoms on some areas of your face and not others, this may mean you have a combination skin. The cheeks are a very common place to experience sensitive skin.*

How can I treat Sensitive Skin?
  • Look for hypoallergenic products as these are less likely to cause a reaction.
  • Cleanse twice a day with a gentle cleanser. Here are some I like for sensitive skin:
  • Avoid using hot water on sensitive areas. You should never use hot water to cleanse anyway, it should be lukewarm, but just be wary while bathing not to do so.
  • Always make sure to wear an SPF daily! This is a huge part of protecting your skin and preventing any further damage. Here are some suitable ones:
  • Moisturise twice daily with a nourishing moisturiser, often sensitivity can be linked to dryness. Like these:

  • Use a soothing/calming mask once a week to help soothe the skin, reduce any inflammation and rehydrate the skin. Like these guys:

What ingredients will benefit Sensitive Skin?
Some of my favourite ingredients for Sensitive Skin are:
  • Hyaluronic acid – This acid helps to draw moisture to the skins tissues to rehydrate the skin.
  • Anti-oxidants – Helps to protect the skin against the environment and helps our skin to retain it's moisture levels among countless other benefits.
  • Amino Acids – These help to lock in moisture while being gentle on the skin.
  • Vitamin C – This helps to brighten the complexion of the skin and prevent oxidative damage.
  • Aloe Vera – This helps to soothe sensitive skin.

Note that for the best results you should use this blogpost in conjunction with the first blogpost of this series - "Basic Skincare Regime" - to help you look after your skin and always remember that what works for someone else may not always work for you so always do your research before buying.

All of the products I have pictured here today also are from www.beautybay.com so if you click the picture it should take you straight to the product on their site so you can get more information on the products themselves and prices. As I mentioned in the first blog of this series I am not linked to the website at all, it is just my favourite place to pick up beauty products!

That’s all for this week! I hope you enjoy the rest of your week and I will be back next week with all you need to know about a ‘normal’ skin type!
Until then…

 All my love,
 SJL X

Sosu Lashes and Limited Edition Lash Case

Hello lovelies! This week I'm going to do the long awaited review of the Sosu Lashes I picked up and her new limited edition lash case. I've been trying out these lashes for months now and if you follow me on Instagram i'm sure you'll know they've made a few appearances there. I was a little late to catch on to the Sosueme trend, I actually didn't even try out her lashes until she released her 'Primark Exclusive' range and even then I only bought one pair in case I didn't like them.  I've never been much of a false lash person for the simple fact that I could not apply them, I literally could NOT do it. I either ended up with the lash stuck pretty much everywhere it shouldn't have been or couldn't get them to stick at all. The only false lashes I could apply myself were the Primark individual lashes so when I bought a pair of her 'Belle' lashes from Primark I wasn't very hopeful but I still wanted to see what all the hype...

Self Love...

In light of it being World Mental Health Awareness Day (October 10th) I wanted touch on one subject in particular that I have been trying to teach myself in recent months: SELF LOVE! In the past few years I have personally struggled with depression and anxiety and in order to help myself cope I use various coping mechanisms that I have picked up during the years. Over time I worked out what made me feel better and what triggered my anxiety so I was more capable of handling a problem should it arise but I wasn’t always able to do this on my own. I picked up several coping mechanisms through mindfulness groups and counselling, if those services weren’t available to me it would have been a lot harder for me to understand what exactly was happening within myself. One thing that you will always hear about in relation to mental health awareness will be self love. Self love is a very important part of the process in making yourself feel better or more able to cope. This was a concept...

Skincare - The Acids

Hello Lovelies! This week my blogpost is going to be based around skincare. If you read my Skincare 101 blog a couple of months ago you will know that I talked about cosmeceutical products, more specifically the differences between them and normal cosmetics. Cosmeceuticals are basically a mix of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They often contain ‘active’ ingredients which can penetrate into the deep layers of the skin therefore they are more beneficial to your skin than normal cosmetics you may find in a pharmacy or supermarket. Among the long list of ‘active’ ingredients you may find in cosmeceuticals, the word acid may come up quite frequently. Cosmeceuticals can contain one or more acid at a time such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or azelaic acid and so on. These are all ‘active’ ingredients as they penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and they all have different uses and benefits for different skin types. Products from brands such as Image Skincare, Nip and F...
