Make-Up Expiry Dates

And it’s Wednesday again! That can only mean one thing, another blog post! This week I wanted to talk about something I have been looking into myself recently. As we all know even our makeup and skincare products have an expiry date. If you’re not sure what it looks like or where to find it check out the picture down below! Now we all know that even though you’re foundation might expire after 9 months, depending on how much you use and how often you use it, you may still have it 12 months later.  And  now let’s be honest, no one wants to throw out a half used bottle of foundation that cost you €30 or €40 because it’s expired as it may still apply perfectly but the damage it is causing your skin, you wouldn’t believe.

I’ll hold my hands up and be the first to admit I’ve done it, both by mistake and purposely! I mean we all don’t keep perfect records of when we buy products either so sometimes we may not know how old the product is. And while some expired products will show obvious signs of being expired by drying out excessively or the mixture separating even, some products will not show obvious signs. I’ve been looking into the effects of it more lately and I was actually shocked at some things I found out so I decided I had to share!

Here are some of the things that can happen due to wearing expired makeup:

  •         Molecules in the products may break down to something else which in turn can lead to inflammation in the skin if you react badly to it. Prolonged inflammation can also lead to bumps, a rash, redness and even blisters on the skin.
  •          All expired makeup can start to hold and develop bacteria which can also lead to skin irritation and may even cause infections if used around the eye area. This will happen liquid products sooner than powder products mostly.
  •          They can lead to dryness or excessive oiliness depending on the product.
  •          SPF products are much less effective after their expiry date which can in turn lead to sun damage if you are unaware.
  •          Skin flare ups can be very common when using expired makeup as the excess bacteria can seep into your pores.
  •          Expired lipsticks and lip glosses can even lead to swelling in the lips!

As I said you may not always know when you purchased a product or how long it’s been open so take note of any changes in the products such as separation, drying out, clumping, even changes in the smell. Also take note if your skin is reacting differently to certain products or if their staying power has decreased, this may mean they are expired. Now of course if you’re using a foundation or mascara etc that is only a month or two expired you may not notice a massive change but the products abilities will only keep worsening and will eventually lead to irritation. Is it worth it?

I personally never paid much attention to expiry dates on products at all but after learning what I have I definitely will be from now on. We don’t all have to be spot on but just aware of what can happen and how to notice when it does.

Here’s how long your products should last typically:

  •          Mascara – 3-4 months
  •          Eyeliner – 6-12 months
  •          Eyeshadow -  6-12 months
  •          Lipstick – 1.5 years
  •          Foundation- 12 months
  •          Powder- 12 months

It may seem daunting and sometimes like a waste of money but just paying a little bit of attention towards it will seriously help your skin in the long run. I hope you enjoyed this week’s blog post and got some helpful information! Let me know if you do or don’t pay attention to the expiry when it comes to your makeup/skincare or if you are going to now! Enjoy the rest of your week lovelies and I will speak to you again next Wednesday! But until then…

All my love,

SJL X

Sosu Lashes and Limited Edition Lash Case

Hello lovelies! This week I'm going to do the long awaited review of the Sosu Lashes I picked up and her new limited edition lash case. I've been trying out these lashes for months now and if you follow me on Instagram i'm sure you'll know they've made a few appearances there. I was a little late to catch on to the Sosueme trend, I actually didn't even try out her lashes until she released her 'Primark Exclusive' range and even then I only bought one pair in case I didn't like them.  I've never been much of a false lash person for the simple fact that I could not apply them, I literally could NOT do it. I either ended up with the lash stuck pretty much everywhere it shouldn't have been or couldn't get them to stick at all. The only false lashes I could apply myself were the Primark individual lashes so when I bought a pair of her 'Belle' lashes from Primark I wasn't very hopeful but I still wanted to see what all the hype...

Self Love...

In light of it being World Mental Health Awareness Day (October 10th) I wanted touch on one subject in particular that I have been trying to teach myself in recent months: SELF LOVE! In the past few years I have personally struggled with depression and anxiety and in order to help myself cope I use various coping mechanisms that I have picked up during the years. Over time I worked out what made me feel better and what triggered my anxiety so I was more capable of handling a problem should it arise but I wasn’t always able to do this on my own. I picked up several coping mechanisms through mindfulness groups and counselling, if those services weren’t available to me it would have been a lot harder for me to understand what exactly was happening within myself. One thing that you will always hear about in relation to mental health awareness will be self love. Self love is a very important part of the process in making yourself feel better or more able to cope. This was a concept...

Skincare - The Acids

Hello Lovelies! This week my blogpost is going to be based around skincare. If you read my Skincare 101 blog a couple of months ago you will know that I talked about cosmeceutical products, more specifically the differences between them and normal cosmetics. Cosmeceuticals are basically a mix of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They often contain ‘active’ ingredients which can penetrate into the deep layers of the skin therefore they are more beneficial to your skin than normal cosmetics you may find in a pharmacy or supermarket. Among the long list of ‘active’ ingredients you may find in cosmeceuticals, the word acid may come up quite frequently. Cosmeceuticals can contain one or more acid at a time such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or azelaic acid and so on. These are all ‘active’ ingredients as they penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and they all have different uses and benefits for different skin types. Products from brands such as Image Skincare, Nip and F...
